From Liverpool to Greece...

“seriously, they're fucking scum, what a cowardly way to behave, violent scum, seriously, just fucking scum. I still can't believe it.”

Yesterday evening Liverpool City Council were meeting to decide the next round of brutal cuts that they'd inflict on the most vulnerable sections of our community (cuts that included getting rid of the school uniform allowance that allows the poorest families to clothe their children for school and drastically reducing the funding to child and adolescent mental health services in the city, basically taking nurses away from unwell children, bastards). Myself and Simon got on our bikes and went to join a demonstration outside the town hall to voice our opposition to this tragedy, we got there and met friends and talked and joked and tried to stay warm, before we joined the chanting and jeering that aimed to disrupt the meeting and let the councilors know we were there and we were disgusted by them.

Within minutes a police officer was antagonising a guy from Occupy Liverpool before turning his attention to us, to ask what the red and black meant and to question if we were we from some new organisation, we offered a fairly abridged version of the theory after making him aware we knew he understood perfectly well what these flags stood for, not getting a reaction this bully left.

“yeah, we just haven't had the numbers, still it's important to be here”

“fucking hell, there's another Matrix van (Merseyside Police riot/crowd control) and loads more cops”

“shit they're gonna kettle.”

We watched as mounted police, backed by further van loads of police on foot, attempted to 'contain' a peaceful group of protesters and we all evaded this kettle and took up position in the road in protest against the police tactics. The aggression from the police was mounting and the fear among the demonstration palpable, with horses being used as weapons amid a total disregard for the right to protest and the safety of those present. They were here to destroy any dissent.

“there's no excuse for animal abuse”

“the other horses won't talk to him now because they'll think he's a grass!”

There was no 'banter' back from the police, instead as the youngest contingent of the demonstration were warned of the dangers of sitting down in this situation, the police charged at them and attacked violently. I watched as one kid was grabbed from behind by a cop who had charged thirty yards by himself, the kid was violently brought to the ground and beaten, the kid tried to struggle against this grown man who made no attempt to arrest and seemed content to fight with the kid while other officers piled in and continued to brutalise him, before eventually arresting him. Fucking cowards. During this mounted police were used to block any attempts to rescue the young guy or to video and photograph what was going on, these cowards knew they were acting illegally and immorally and chants clearly echoed this sentiment.

A frenzy then followed as individuals seemed to be picked at random from the demonstration and arrested in the most violent manner, while desperate attempts were made to de-arrest the innocent victims of this brutal operation. Those arrested were remarkably young and it became clear that they were picked due to their involvement in the Occupy movement in the city, not for having committed any offence. Some were also undoubtedly picked because they were the least physically imposing and officers were able to wrestle them to the ground much easier than they would be able to if they had picked out adult members of the demonstration. A good friend of ours then came over, blood all over his face, he is a school student and one of the most eloquent and sincere young men I have ever met, a police officer had punched him.

A frightening stand-off then ensued, as we stayed together in the face off ridiculous levels of violence from the police who had called in even more reinforcements from the Matrix (they now easily outnumbered the demonstration and were carrying tasers among other weapons). It became clear that we needed to leave as one to prevent any further injuries, these thugs weren't going to let up. As we walked off ,the demonstration over, the intimidation continued, as one young lady was surrounded by three officers threatening arrest for cycling on the pavement. We quickly circled the officers and made sure that no further injustices were to be carried out.

We walked through the city, until it was safe to disperse, followed by vans and police on foot, many carrying tasers. We made sure that no one left alone and said our goodbyes and vowed to return. Me and Simon got on our bikes and got some dinner and went home.

If being punk means anything, it means looking out for each other, it means dignity and equality, and it means standing up for ourselves and each other when our government are attacking us. We have been busy writing new material for a release in spring next year. We're all pretty excited about how the song is shaping up, we've got some crazy ideas for packaging as well so more on that when more is confirmed. We don't want to give too much away on this until things have been fully set in stone but we're pretty excited all the same!

We have also been busy booking shows for early next year with Battle for Paris. The last few shows we shared together were amazing so we're really looking forward to seeing those guys again. Their new songs are so sick! We're in the process of confirming 3 shows up north. More on this once things have been finalised (again!). We are playing in Brighton on the 25th of February with Touche Amore, Basement and Gnarwolves which should be sweet and then we will be touring again properly in March.

On a final note, I've just been having a reminisce about our first trip away in Europe with Ravachol. It was pretty special for all of us. I'm sure I speak for us all when I say we never would have expected to all be traveling across Europe with our friends and playing our music every night when we were growing up. It was a humbling yet gratifying experience and we will all never forget it. Here's a clip from one of our most memorable shows in Budapest, Hungary.

In the light of endless attacks on the more vunerable members of society from our heinous government we have been pretty busy with direct action and protest. We recently joined an anti-fascist protest against the BNP in Liverpool and as a result we had our photo (see above) posted on a website that attempts to expose enemies of the far right and intimidate them. When you and your fellow racist scumbags are drowned out, spat on and chased out of Liverpool I guess you have to try and fight back some how. Nice try.

Back on the road

Last weekend we finally got back on the road! This time in the form of a 3 day tour with the amazing Battle For Paris.

We started the tour off in the Fighting Cocks in Kingston. It was our first time meeting Battle For Paris and watching them live, they were all nice guys and great to hang out with. Have to say a big thank you to them for putting us up for two nights and being rad as fuck. Hi BFP!

Next up was Andover. The first band on, Eagleburner, played their first show and slayed and Battle For Paris played another blinder.

This weekend of shows finished at a place called the Ritz, Penzance's new punk as shit venue, which laid host to Dirty Summer Fest! the brainchild of Porter, Jak Stringer and all other associated members of the Dirty Sunday Crew.

This was an incredible evening and one that none of us will ever forget I'm sure. It was an all day indoor festival with live bands playing from 2pm-12am and an after show party mixed up by the gnarshred brothers Max and Thom Weeks.

Every band played out of their skins that night! It was amazing to take part and to be surrounded by like minded people and friends that we have acquired from playing/hosting shows over the last few years.

This weekend of shows was the first chance for us to try out a new set we have been working on. One of of the new songs we have can be seen in the video below.

The other new songs we have are coming out on a split 7" we are doing with Ravachol that Zach Kilburn is putting out to coincide with the European tour we have in October. We're all super stoked about a. touring with such an amazing set of people and b. to be part of a record with their songs on it!

Recently I was asked to provide some information about WCOLT, and what we were up to with our record, for a magazine back in my hometown (Omagh, Ireland). It was a strange experience to be writing about playing in a DIY screamo band and knowing that it would be read by some people who I used to know really well, but had no idea that this was how I now spent my days, and this was how I now seen the world. I definitely found I had to conciously work harder at being as honest as we always try to be with these things, there was a temptation to tone down some of what we would usually say, but ultimately it says all I wanted to get across. It was extremely flattering to be asked! The transcript is printed in full below for those who care for it.

We're called We Came Out Like Tigers and we're a DIY screamo band from Liverpool. We set out to make the most emotional music that we can, we try and make songs that are as chaotic and as heavy as possible, while still maintaining elements that are stripped down and delicate, all within the one song. We believe passionately that the only way we could possibly function as a band is by sticking to a DIY ethos, this means that we take charge of everything ourselves, we don't have a manager, a booking agent, etc. and instead we share these tasks among the four people in WCOLT; this also means that we avoid the commodification of our songs and are in a position where we can decide what venues we play, what promoters we play for, and what way our music is used and distributed. We have chosen to do this at the expense of other pursuits that would offer much more material gain, but the experiences have been priceless, and the friendships we've formed are incredible.

On August 14th we will release a 4 track self-titled EP, it is coming out on 7" Vinyl and is being released by IIOVV Records and Moshtache Records, it was recorded earlier this year in Liverpool at a short-lived squat venue called Don't Drop the Dumbbells (an old gym that for a few months became the centre of Liverpool’s underground music scene), this is the same venue where we played the first night of our winter tour with Kasa (Screamo from Cornwall)
last December, and where we screen-printed the patches that come with the record.

The record is everything that we wanted to say up until this point; we hope it is as sincere as we intended it. It's an angry record, it definitely focuses on the darker end of the spectrum of emotions that we all experience, but it is grounded in hope. There is a focus on despair, disconnection, and worthlessness, but by acknowledging this we hope it can then be worked through; the EP concludes with this hopefulness, a hope for something more than you're presented with, and knowing that being there for each other is all that really matters when all is said and done.

It's definitely a politicised record. We exist within a political context and this must be addressed, to face it with apathy is just crippling. WCOLT exists as a way for us to actively oppose a system that fails the vast majority of people, being in this band is our primary act of resistance. You're not supposed to be in a band once you leave school, it's career time then, but we argue that you should purely and honestly pursue those things which are going to offer you some meaning, and that that's a noble enough reason to keep going. Collectively we despise the rampant consumerism of contemporary culture, the lifestyle you're presented with is one where you work 40 hours just to spend Fridays and Saturdays consuming alcohol, surely that offers no one fulfilment. The songs on the EP deal openly with our own struggles to rationalise our withdrawal from this way of life, while we believe entirely that this is right for us, it's hard to not feel like a failure when those around you are succeeding materially and in their careers; ultimately, no career will ever offer us that feeling of being surrounded by your best friends for 20 minutes while you play songs that mean everything to you, in a city you've never visited before, that's really what this is all about.

We've toured the UK three times so far, most recently in April with Norwich Screamo band Ravachol, and previously with Kasa and the sorely missed Maths. In August we're doing a weekend of shows with Battle For Paris, culminating in Dirty Summer Fest (underground hardcore/screamo/punk festival in Cornwall) when we release our E.P.. We have a few more shows in August and a short UK run in September before we head off on our biggest tour yet, Europe with Ravachol, we're away for just over two weeks with 14 shows, taking in Holland, Germany, Austria, and Hungary. We're releasing a split 7" with Ravachol just before this tour and I genuinely believe they're the most exciting band in the country right now.

Influences: We all listen to a lot of very heavy music and are totally indebted to screamo bands like Ampere, Fall of Efrafa, Circle Takes The Square, and La Quiete, but also we listen to a lot of other types of music, especially folk and country, including bands like Carissa's Wierd and Wilco, as well as Black Metal like Wolves in the Throne Room and Liturgy. Our favourite UK bands at the moment are Ravachol, Kasa, Maths, Kaddish, and Battle of Wolf 359. Also, the new Beau Navire and Ampere albums are incredible!

The Reclaimation of Adventure

It was a 1990's dream for a city still reeling from the despair of 80's austerity, optimistically titled 'Pleasure Island.' It was about two years ago that Si first showed me it in all it's derelict glory; a former theme park of sorts with once carefully manicured gardens, now entirely reclaimed by nature and youths with vandalous intentions, finally making it something which was genuinely worth visiting. It was frightening and exhilarating, so wild, and a constant reminder that nature doesn't take long to undo the damage of commerce. It was stunning.

Not long after this first visit, we returned to discover holes in fences now patched and guarded by men in hi-vis vests, protecting the inexorable return to nature as a commodity. The presence of their machines and site offices so crass in the company of a place that had given us so much genuine pleasure by simply being untouched for barely a decade. They destroyed it again though, and fuck them for doing that.

We continued to feel like that for quite a while (almost two years in all) then last month I made a chance discovery, with "Pleasure Island" fast nearing completion, holes in the fences had reappeared. After a quick look round I resolved to return for a more thorough examination of what they'd done to a place we had once held so dear, how had they destroyed true wilderness?

We picked the evening of a partial lunar eclipse, all too aware of it's appropriateness, at least they can't stop us enjoying that... But they had - all that was different was the light emanating from the Mersey just slightly below.

Fuck this, I can't wait to see what they've done to it.
We just need to be wary of one security guard, but he's probably asleep by now.
Can we get in through the same way as before?
The hole is in pretty much the same place, it's like someone else knew and beat us to it.
Sweet.

But it wasn't there, repatched, and this time with razor-wire to guard their precious machinery and carefully laid lawns, our entrance to a past filled with adventure had been unceremoniously cut off.

Fuck this, let's just climb the gate.

And with that sentiment no amount of razor wire was going to keep us out. What we discovered though wasn't the pleasure island of old, the burnt out bridges had been replaced with new structures that crossed the most perfect ponds, the shattered glass of the original cafe given way to portable security huts, and the overgrown paths now cleared. Any chance of real adventure destroyed.

We sat down to enjoy the biscuits and tea we'd brought with us (intended to mark our glorious return...), but it marked the death of what was once ours. But it was a victorious death.
Pleasure Island will undoubtedly open to the public soon, but seriously, fuck that, wait until it's dark and enjoy it on your own terms, that gate is easier to get over than you think.

New song/Save our NHS

Hey everybody. We have put up a new song from our self titled e.p. that is coming out very soon. Its called A lesson in solitude and if you have seen us live recently you maywell recognise it. The e.p. itself is pretty much there. Included will be a bookmark, a lyric book, a patch, and a few other things we thought you might enjoy.

We're currently booking shows for the rest of the summer and have announcements to make once all logistics have been sorted out. Hopefully catch everyone at a show near you soon.

A website called 38degrees has been doing some pretty good things to raise awareness to the fact that people aren't happy about the proposed plans for the NHS http://38degrees.org.uk/. Go have a look at there site and sign the petition if you agree with their cause, every little thing we do can make a difference.

These Things We Do Aren't Working.

We wrote a new song this week, I think its going to be called Remember Why You Are, musically it is fast and aggressive, lots of blast beats and harsh riffs. Lyrically it is about all the issues surrounding work that we have all struggled with recently. It is about how we work 50 hours a week because we think we don’t have any money, and the difficult decision to opt out of that system. I have been reading about alcohol recently, and the idea that consumption of alcohol gives people a frame work to live in. We work a hugely tiring week that stops us from living at all, but are paid off by Friday and Saturday night when we can throw our cares to the wind and let loose, making up for the way your boss treats you like shit, the way you never get to see the people you are in love with, never doing the few things you drunkenly promised yourself in youth you would do without question. Anything is possible and who cares about work because it’s party time right? But the amount of violence from revellers and cops this provokes, the amount of times friends bikes get kicked apart by frustrated men and women staggering to the taxi rank, it has left me resolute not to be a part of this. We are not a straight edge band and do party, although this is becoming more and more scarce, but I personally find that spending my small amount of cash on one of the most heavily taxed products available doesn’t make up for the sale, part and parcel, of my life. I currently work just enough to get by, I have no plans for the future and no pension, I don’t have a mortgage and I don’t have any savings, but playing this 20 minutes of 5 songs to a few people and sobbing as we do it is unquestionably more valuable than any of this. If I was told tomorrow that my life was to be very limited by a great illness, although it would never be easy to deal with, but it would be a lot less difficult knowing that I have already achieved so many of my dreams. Its time to stop this horrible cycle, we owe it to ourselves! S.

This weekend (March 26^th) is the March for The Alternative, a chance to let our government know that we will no longer stomach the politics of greed. When the top 100 earners in the UK earn a combined £240 Billion and our defecit is £90 Billion, is it fair to stop EMA? Is it the wisest move to cut back on Incapacity Benefit? Is it right that it is now illegal to sleep rough in Westminster, and illegal to give food to anyone who is sleeping there? What do they suggest? It seems that the only option the government has for people who fall through the net is to fuck off and stop being a nuisance, to simply starve to death, but to do it quietly.

When there are laws in your society that are dangerous and unjust then we have an obligation to break the law. We recently took soup out for the homeless in Liverpool made from the surplus food in society, and it was the most inspiring but heartbreaking thing I have ever been involved in. We realised that every night we didn’t do it then someone goes hungry that could have eaten if we had been there. We have some shows with the incredible Ravachol, we are really excited, they are inspiring people. Every day of being in this band I am impressed by how hard so many people work to provide music, shows, t-shirts, records, venues, artwork, radio shows, zines and everything else we all need to keep this scene going, all for little or no financial gain. We are so proud to be able to contribute to such a noble community in our own small way. See you soon I hope.

Recent events...

We found ourselves having an impromtue break at the start of this year as recording has taken a little while longer than expected, however, we are now waiting on the mastering to be finished. We are really excited about this ep, it will be 4 full songs, the majority of which we have toured this winter.

They are heavier and faster than previous recordings, but also slower and more gentle in parts too. Lyrically they are more dark and angry, with our first forays into political themes. It is so far getting a vinyl, cd and tape release with various friends helping us out, so keep a keen eye out in the coming weeks.

Aside from this we have been very politically active, we urge everyone to go down to London on the 26^th of March, to join the protest and let our fraudulent government know what we think of their attacks on the vulnerable in this country.

We have also got involved in a number of Critical Mass groups, namely Liverpool and Manchester. For those who are unfamiliar, they are unofficial bike rides around any given city by a large group of cyclists, reclaiming the roads for forms of transport other than cars. They have so far been some of the best Friday nights of the year, Manchester especially was excellent, with over 50 cyclists en mass in fancy dress and with a chorus of whistles bells and shouts, (even a boom box playing Wu Tang Clan!) making ourselves visible to a somewhat hostile road network. They are the most noble events, any cars that attempt to pull out and disrupt the stream of cyclists was blocked from doing so by willing members of the group until all other riders had passed, children and the less confident ride at the front whilst more confident cyclists bring up the rear. I can’t think of a more good natured, positive and free way to spend an evening. Find your local group today!

As well as that we are attempting to set up a Food Not Bombs group in Liverpool, taking waste food from where ever it is not needed and giving it to those that do. From our first attempts it seems a lot easier than we thought, and perfect yet wasted food is in no short supply.

WCOLT/KASA Dec '10 Tour (Rik's Diary)

Day one. Manchester.

First day of tour and we had the short drive to Manchester. Tonight was being put on by Simon Catling, who has always been very kind to us. A couple of the guys from Well Wisher (check them out!) came down to see us and my friend Thom. We were a bit nervous about meeting the Kasa guys as we’d booked a whole tour with them but never actually met them in person. They all walked into the venue as we were sound checking, which was a strange first meeting. Super Intense Corpse Muncher were the first band on and were FAST. The gig went well and we all drove back to Liverpool and everyone slept at ours.

It turned out to be a fairly quiet day and was not a sign of things to come.

Day two. Liverpool.

It’s important that you gain things from going on tour and seeing sights/how other people live and think etc. are big point for me, so it felt good that I got to spend the day showing Kasa around Liverpool. A lovely meal in Egg (a lovely independent vegetarian/vegan restaurant, check it out!), followed by a walk around the Xmas market. Kasa really wanted to visit the cavern, where I’ve never actually been, so we went there, were touristy and chatted over a pint.

I really enjoyed having this time with the guys as it is weird trying to figure each other out on tour and gave us a chance to chat and have some fun before the gig.

Thanks to Jake we had a great gig at Don’t Drop The Dumbells. Jake is a great man and does a lot for creative people in the area. I really hope people appreciate all he does.

After the gig I introduced Kasa to buckfast and we had a house party back at ours, which involved way too much bad pop punk music, but it was really enjoyable.

Day three. Norwich.

It was a long drive over to Norwich, longer than we thought. When we got there it was late and very dark. Mikee had very kindly stepped in to promote the night after the other promoter pulled out last minute. Zen from Maths came down to see us and it was great as always chatting to him. Maths really are one of the best bands around in the UK right now. We all got our hands on a copy of WWHRD?, which I was pretty excited about!

I felt strange at the venue this day. It’s weird how some days you just can’t seem to control how you think and act. It is really important that you try and focus your mind on being positive and creative, but I find it a learning curve to try and be successful at this all the time.

After a cold gig we headed back to Mikee and Emma’s house. We tried to avoid being scratched to pieces by some cute kittens, watched a Bboy competition on TV and did a lot of talking. Mikee and Emma treated us so well, really know what it’s like to be a touring band and do their own screen printing. It really restores your belief in people when you meet people who help the scene at much as they do.

Mikee’s hospitality and support for the scene are very admirable. It would be good if more people were like this, in it for the right reasons and supporting bands.

Day four. Bournemouth.

More driving. Arrived at the strange venue Ibar, which actually turned out to be quite good. Apparently the owner made the computer game Worms.

There were a couple of people at the merch stalls doing distros. Distros are so good. We all spent a good while looking through the vinyl and spent too much money, but got a loads of good stuff, Kaddish, Battle of Wolf 359, Loma Prieta, June Paik, La Quiete. Basically all the screamo that was there! It’s great that distros are there and they really help to support the scene.

This was the first night we played with Witch Cult and it was their first gig, which was great. They are such lovely guys. After the gig we took the gear back to the houses we were staying at. We’d been told there were some free drinks waiting for us at a cocktail bar in town but by the time we’d walked back Porter had drank them all! He definitely enjoyed it. We all had a good chat and a joke and enjoyed an eventful drunken walk back to the houses we were staying at.

Day five. Southampton.

Again we arrived in the dark. We had a quick look around Southampton’s high street after we loaded the gear in. I found a great Oxfam which had a load of vinyl. Check it out if you’re ever there. After talking to locals at the gig I found out that that’s pretty much their only record store. Most independent record stores have shut or are shutting. People really need to support their local store if they have one.

The gig was strange because it was in a weirdly laid out pub, but everyone put their all into it and it ended up being a great gig. You need to make the most of being in strange situations. It’s easy to let it affect you and your experiences in a negative way, but it’s best to try and look at it in a new positive way.

Afterwards Tom put us up and we all had a good party back at his. By this time we were comfortable enough around each and politeness had pretty much gone out of the window.

One thing about partying too much on tour is, even though it is loads of fun, you don’t get to spend time looking around. You have to balance your time well if you want to get the most out of it. We didn’t get to see much the next day.

Day six. Weymouth.

Again we arrived at the venue in the dark and we didn’t really get to see anything, majorly due to crazy weather conditions.

Me and Fabian had a quick walk around and went to see the snow covered beach, which looked beautiful. We finally touched the sea for the first time on the tour too.

We got to share a stage with Kerouac which was great. Plenty of pit games took place throughout the night. This was the last gig of three in a row with Witch Cult and it was a pleasure to have been around them.

Unfortunately there were a couple of people who spoilt the night slightly be being narrow minded and violent. They made fools of themselves and didn’t stop us from putting our all into the show. I was very impressed with how one of my band mates dealt with this situation and I hope he realises how proud I am of him. People who are aggressive at gigs are not helping anything in any way. It is good people get into shows and are passionate, but hurting other people is not the way to express yourself. Being punk is not about wearing the right clothes, being punk is about how you live.

After the gig we all amazed ourselves by fitting nine people into a tiny lounge. It was a squeeze, but that’s what touring is all about, making the most of the situation you are put in.

Day seven. Day off, travelled to Penzance.

On our way to Penzance we stopped off at this place Luke from Kasa had told me about previously, it was basically a ghost town. It was a group of housing between two towns that had not been finished. We had a snowball fight, which ended up in a few of us getting soaked, but it was rad.

Again the weather conditions were crazy. After another intense drive we went to Porters mums house and she was so nice to us. She made us all a massive meal, which we were all really happy about. We met Woody the dog. Later we had a few drinks and went into Penzance with Zac from Crocus. It was great to see how much Porter's mum supports him with his band. Parents treat their children being in a band differently, so it was really refreshing to see how much she wanted him to enjoy the experience. It means a lot to have a supportive family.

Day eight. Penzance. Dirty Sunday.

We woke up refreshed and felt like kings after having a proper wash. Porter made us all eggy bread, which was the first time I’ve had it in years. We watching some TV and spoke about how pathetic the X Factor is.

When we got to the venue we met Jackie, the promoter, who took amazing care of us. The Kasa boys had been telling us all tour about how legendary the Penzance dirty Sunday gigs were and we weren’t disappointed. We got to taste proper Cornish pasties and then watched the first few bands. Crocus played with a new line up and were really tight and powerful, everyone seemed impressed. We had an absolutely amazing time playing, it really was a great way to end the tour. People seemed really into it and it ended up getting pretty messy. Kasa just blew everyone away completely. This gig seemed like the gig we’ve been wanting to happen for a long time. There was a real buzz and so much energy when all the bands played.

After the gig we had a truly amazing night talking with so many people included Greg (from Ravachol), who it was a massive pleasure to meet. It ended up being a very eventful night but I won’t go into that.

There was a lot of talk about a lack of screamo bands when were down south. Even though the south coast has a cool scene of its own, it seems most bands are focusing on hardcore. But it was a pleasure to have been part of the scene for a few days. UK bands labeled as screamo that are blowing us away at the moment are Maths, Kaddish and Battle of Wolf 359. These are all special bands and you should really check them out.

It was such a pleasure to share the stage with Kasa every night. Every single night we were all blown away by the passion and power they put into their set. They were amazing people to share a tour with and we miss them already. We met a lot of good people on this tour and feel so privileged to have had this experience. Thank you so much to everyone who gave us somewhere to stay, put a gig on, spoke to us or came down to see us, we couldn’t have done this tour without you. We will learn from the negative and positive experiences and progress. We had some special times and have some very good memories.

The Ends of Ends of Eras

Panicky phone calls in the middle of the day, crying into the handset, looking for help when you know only you can fix this. Days when bad news upon bad news upon more bad news trips over itself to find you and hit you full force in the gut. You hear the pain on the other end, you whisper carefully, you know I love you don't you? You know I love you? Words like that destroy all the defences I have, I crumble and you know I cannot keep this up. Did you ever think you would be in a situation this hard, this desperate? what are the mathematical chances of so many horrid things happening in twelve months? Is this the dream? Is this what we have worked for, striven for, for years? Did you ever think you would ever be in a situation this hard this impossible, with no possible cure, no end? There is but one reason to stay afloat, to keep your head above the water, not to dissapear into wildernesses and never return, not to hit the bottoms of bottles, not drive fast bleary eyed in search of comforting solidity... You know i love you don't you? You know I love you? Its the ends of ends of eras.

I wrote this as my dad was being treated for pancreatic cancer, it was undoubtedly the worst time of my life. At times like this all you have is the people you love. Every night as I left the hospital ward I was aware that it was quite possibly the last time I would ever see that remarkable man, and every time I told him I loved him it would quite possibly be the last time he would ever hear it. There is never going to be a convenient time for things like this to happen, you will never be ready, life does not wait and nor must you. Never forget to tell the important people just how important they are. You never know if it will be the last time you say "I love you."

Too many of my friends have too much time to waste, and they sit there wasting it. But by God I want to be with them, just to sit with them again and waste time, and talk. And we talk of friends not there and wars we've read about but cannot understand; and other wars we know all too well. Until day is night and it's day again and we leave, we leave each other again. Leave. It's hard to give a lot when a little is all you've got.

You're only fear should be a life unlived. I am so full of love, so where does all this hate come from? Tear down these curtains because the sunlight gives us hope. Let air in through the windows to once more grace our throats. I am so full of love, so where does all this hate come from?

The first part of this was written as part of a longer piece originally. I was watching people who meant a lot to me move away from Liverpool, none of them had chosen to leave. They had discovered that a lot of what was promised by University/a new city/etc. just wasn't true. I went from seeing them every day, to seeing them for a few hours for a drink once every few months when I went back to Ireland, I thought it must've been crushing for them at the time, but I'd have rather 'wasted time' with them, listening to what they have to say, than spend time with people who hadn't got the passion, emotion, and opinions they had. Simon's line 'Your only fear...' worked so perfectly with what I had been writing about, I feared for them and for myself. I didn't think it was time for any of us to give up. Despite the focus on hate, this is a hopeful song for me, we're tackling that hate head on, we're acknowledging it, experiencing it, and working to move through it. I think about that line 'Your only fear should be a life unlived' a lot, it's perfect, not in a motivational poster way, but it helps to remind me of what you should focus on. Experiencing hate, hurt, and loss is part of living but we can work towards experiencing much more if we choose to. FD

It has been quite some time since we last updated this... but we have been very busy. We recently toured with our good friends Kasa which, despite some hectic moments, was one of the best weeks of my life. We managed to survive everything from icy hills and kissing skinheads in Weymouth to cops and rugby players in Penzance. We have made five incredible friends, including driver Matt Kirby, and were lucky enough to watch them play 8 days in a row. We also had the honour of playing with some mind blowing musicians, specifically: Kerouac, The Long Haul, Witch Cult, Super Intense Corpse Muncher, Bastions, Crocus, As We Sink, Rasputin, Baptists, Iron Witch - check them out, it was a pleasure. We were also insanely impressed by the scene down south, there are some super organised and motivated individuals that are keeping everything we love and care about alive, thank you, you know who you are.

We are also in the process of sorting out recording for our next ep and a possible split, and we are insanely excited about it. It will be four or five songs that we have been playing live, they are both much heavier and much more melodic than anything we have done before.

We have finished Brickface #6, featuring interviews with Maths, Celeste, Moloch, Cold Ones, Punch and Comadre, a word search and some rad layouts from Greg Milne of Ravachol, message him at myspace.com/mandala_design.

On a final more serious note, every night of the Kasa tour we pledged our full support to the people involved in the protests against the cuts being imposed on us from a corrupt government. There is a difference between vandalism and violence, neither of which deserve the shocking and saddening behaviour of the Metropolitan Police Force.

MATHS and WCOLT uk tour: Day 2#

Day 2

day two... and after a day of working for Simon and me (both poor as shit so unfortunately necessary) we got home to pack up our gear, feed maths and get going. Unfortunately for us Simons infamous "pipe works, do yours" Van suffered some clutch problems, meaning that for the duration of this tour we would need to squeeze into rik's 5 seater VW polo which chrik aptly named "the chrik mobile" (very inventive there chaps). Us and all the band gear and sleeping stuff! my god it's a squeeze!

Me and fabes got the initial short straws and had to endure a 2 hr journey to Leeds interlocked with each other, squashed in a space barely wide enough for two very small children. luckily this is the start of the tour and we both smelled reasonable clean (more on this later).

Never the less we decided the only comfortable way was to take it in turns putting each others arms around each other, kinda like what you'd do to cuddle up to your girlfriend on a sexy night in. needless to say we got a few puzzled looks from on looking motorists along the m62!

discomfort aside the journey was fun as hell and we arrived at the fenton in Leeds stiff as owt but in high spirits.

Maths had already arrived and were there to greet us. These guys were hardly traveling in style but had a big old salon car so were not struggling for space.

The venue "the fenton" for all of you who have not been there is a cool little place. Lots of posters on the wall of past shows and experiences that the walls and sticky floors have already been through. We noticed a few of our favorites had played the venue before which was encouraging.

The first few bands played, and were impressive and convenient supports for us guys. they brought down quite a few people and id guess at there being 40 -50 people in there at its peak.

we hit the stage just before maths and did our thing. It was warmly welcomed and highly praised, which is always very nice seeing as we arent from leeds and its the first time we have played there. We sold some cd's and t-shirts here aswell so at least some of the support was sincere.

Then along came maths! unfortunately (as is often the case) as the night went on alot of the crowd went, but this didn't effect the guys at all. They moved all of there equipment of the stage and onto the floor and unleashed a scintillating set/performance of equal quality and sincerity of the previous night. as the set went on more and more people starting filing back into the room to enjoy what was to be a shorten version of the set a day previous. After they played, ears still ringing out, people were calling out for more, but that's not maths's style!

we packed up and headed back to simons family home for some tea. Alfie experienced his first taste of a kiwi fruit and we all went of to bed. Still no partying!! but it was late and we were tired and wanted to see Leeds in its full glory the day after. We packed into the smallest room in the house for some strange reason and slept..... end of day 2!

MATHS and WCOLT uk tour: Day 1#

Day 1#

And a triumph for the Liverpool hardcore scene. Last night Brickface press and wolstenholme creative space played host to a night we named 'ALTAR', a tribute to all things dark and gloomy. This also coincided with the opening night of our northwest tour with MATHS.

We have played a couple of shows with maths before so we were all looking forward to being re-united. Also in tonight's lineup were amazing liverpool based band BEAST. anyone who remembers the faces of kling klang will be reminded here as a former member is on show here.

And so the show begins. As part of the night a doomy ALTAR was erected, with sheep's furs and skulls arrayed amongst the thickset candles and chanted choir music playing against this backdrop really made for an awe-inspiring sight.

Our friend rob had also taking some photos which fit in brilliantly with our theme for the night

we played our set with no major mishap. Playing with our hoods up proved to be difficult though as the candles made and crowds made for a very hot show!

next up was proggy/doomy/8-bit stylie two piece BEAST! These guys seriously now there stuff. While the drummer incessantly drums up a storm, the synth/organ player brings on the doom in a most brilliant prog-like fashion, crescendo-ing in and out of musical bliss. i was reminded of some f-zero snes classic....

and now to maths.....

.....WOW. oh my what a show! One day on and im definitely feeling the effects of a bangover (the consequence of too much headbanging). These guys are so captivating and invigoration, it left people feeling num an nausea 10 mins after there set had finished! 20-25 mins of pure riff laden brilliance that is impossible to listen too without seemingly dislodging a few vertebrae. These next few days are sure to be enjoyable1

Apres la show we all settled down to a nice cup o tea and a catch up chat. not to rock and roll i know but we were all exhausted and there's plenty of time for partying coming up! Onwards then, to Leeds!

A few weeks back Simon give an interview about his thoughts regarding art, DIY ethics, and music, amongst other things, it's transcribed below.

1) On the Brickface Facebook page you write that, ‘we aim solely to provide an arena for anyone with an opinion and a pen and paper, something real that can be held in your hand, not lost in "cyberspace”!’ This implies a resentment of the affects that the Internet has had on printed media. With this in mind, what are your views concerning the rise of alternative democratic methods of cultural discourse (e.g. Blog sites, online discussion boards, online mags)?

1. firstly i have absolutely no adversion to internet publication, i think blogs are great, and we all read a number of them regularly, specifically godisinthetv and drowned in sound. however due to the ease of access people have to getting their views published in this way, there has been a saturation of opinions. thus, people will pick and choose articles from a number of websites and often not properly pay attention to them, making it very disposable. to combat this i believe that if people have a solid, carefully assembled, lovingly thought out product that they know they cannot replace if lost, know that they are one of a few people to have it then they will take more care over it, and hopefully will read it cover to cover. it makes everything you might miss on the internet so much more precious, so much more engaging.

2) Clearly, the prominence of such sites has had a negative effect on the DIY Zine culture (at least in terms of numbers produced and distributed). However, because of the ease of production, the Internet has arguably allowed for even broader community participation. Do you think of this as in line with or an affront to the traditional DIY ethic of democratization?

2.i think that the internet has made communication so much easier between bands and promoters and consumers and deffinately cuts out the need for middle managment such as booking agents, making things loads more diy. in terms of zines, there are a lot less and the few that exist struggle a lot. however, this is not necesarrily a bad thing. i personally believe there is no such thing as improvement in regards to situations such as this, there is only change, leaving new benefits and new problems. it is silly to resent this change or herald it, it is going to happen and nothing can stop it, so it is important to just accept it. however i love zines and love making them and i know a core of other people do too, so we continue.

3) Concerning the distribution of music, it has been suggested many times that purely digital products are the way of the future, however, I would argue that there are still many consumers who would be willing to spend money to buy a physical copy of the music they love. What is your view on the decline of the physical format? Do you think we are looking towards a future in which all music is only available digitally or do you think there will always be a place for the physical product?

i still spend a lot of money on music, and have never paid for a download. it's not just about listening to the songs, its about a communication of ideas , of emotions. it seems absurd to me that people believe listeners wil be able to fully engage with and spend time over music they produce if the artist themselves presents them with only an electronic copy. a record speaks volumes, the artwork can be grandiose and impressive, the messages in the sleeve can be political, loving, angry, emotive.... the lyrics are always worth reading, even the vinyl itself can be a vairety of colours. this is worth £15, a hurried careless mp3 is not. we are currently releasing a vinyl and a cassette, because when dealing with seemingly "outdated" methods you fuly engage with them, you hear the crackle, see the grooves, have to physically touch the music, it is so much more exciting. just because text can be read on the internet doesn't mean books will cease to exist, niether will records, as long as there are a few remaining people that care about their art, and a few that are willing to listen.

4) What are your views on the ‘free’ music culture that has come about with the emergence of free downloading? Do you think this has/will have a positive or negative affect on the production of independent music?

negative effect? no. not at all. there have always been people that don't buy music, and they still don't buy it now. i do illegally download music, but that is because i cannot afford to spend any more than i do on records and gigs, in doing so i find out about even more bands, so go to shows, and eventually that cost comes back around. i also only download albums from major labels, and would probably never buy a record from Rupert Murdoch or Richard Branson. if you are into diy culture and underground music the chances are you value it enough to part with a little cash, often because you know the musician is as poor as you!

5) I noticed that, when describing the Brickface Zine on your Facebook page, you assert that ‘the only way to ensure true honesty and integrity is if no one makes a profit from its production.’ What further views do you hold regarding the ethics involved in the art v commerce debate? Do you aim for achieve self-sufficiency with your art? If so, do you think that the Internet has helped with this in any way?

we deffinitely aim for sef sufficiency, i can't afford to make much of a loss. i run my own business as a plumber and really enjoy it, i realise that dreams of being a superstar and incredibly wealthy will not make me any happier than i am now, running a business, a band and a zine. the internet is brilliant for writing zines though, interviews are so much easier, reviews are easier come by, we sell a lot of copies over the internet. we can book bands and shows over the internet... it is invaluable. it is like anything in life, moderation is the key, just because something has a negative side doesn't mean you should boycott it necessarily.

6) Do you think that the Internet has helped to build a bigger community around either WCOLT or the Brickface project? Also, do you think that the Internet has had a positive or negative overall effect on each of these projects?

it has an undoubtedly positive effect. people can hear our band before they book us, we can hear bands before we book them. communication is tonnes easier. as i just mentioned, just because the internet has its downsides doesn't give you due cause to completely renounce it, i'm no Luddite! on the flip side, just because it has its benefits doesn't justify abandoning everything that came before it. moderation is so important.

7) Finally, how do you think the emergence and prominence of the Internet in contemporary society has affected DIY culture as a whole, and what ethical and moral issues do you think have been/should be raised?

i have come across screamo blogs that post links to albums of bands that are now defunct and out of of print. we are featured on some of these so people can download our eps, meaning that bands that once would have been forgotten can constantly be rediscovered by people. however one prominent blog posted a link to the then soon to be released Daughters album. this was a betrayal of the scene, it was no longer about preserving small bands but about getting something for nothing. although the internet is anarchic and makes stealing music easy, it doesn't mean it is always right. if you download the entire U2 catalog, no one loses anything, if you download a small bands ep that they made themselves it is undeniably wrong. the increase in mp3 culture has meant that bands are putting more and more effort into releases, no longer can you just put out a cd with a photo of yourself, i now own 7" in the shapes of a devils face, a clock, a vomit splatter, a nuclear explosion, 12" with wolves etched on one side, records in every neon colour ive ever seen, clear records, gatefold, triple vinyl albums.... artists have had to step it up to keep people buying, and this is a great thing. the internet can never kill art, what a naive and arrogant thing to believe.

A lesson in solitude, as I stared into the cobalt blue of the sky at day's end.

It’s been a long time since we’ve documented what we’ve been up to, and it’s going to be impossible to share everything here, but try we must.

The end of May seen us play some of the craziest shows we’ve ever been fortunate enough to be a part of, we played a charity all-dayer in Liverpool for the amazing OBSCENIC people (www.obscenic.co.uk), we ventured across for our first Manchester show, played Liverpool’s Light Night after-party at the A Foundation gallery with the incredible David Hoyle, got to play with Cold Ones and Sam Barrett in the Wolstenholme Projects gallery, and played the HOTTEST VENUE EVER at Soundcity. Every one of those shows brought something different, but there are a few things that deserve to be noted: David Hoyle is endlessly inspiring as an artist and a person, OBSCENIC are making Liverpool greater, Sam Barrett is a total gentleman, and THANK YOU to the people who came and watched us in the Jacarandas basement, there were loads of amazing bands on elsewhere that night, that one felt special!

We recorded two new tracks recently with Steve from POST-MUSIC/a.P.A.t.T. They’re up on our myspace now to listen to. We were fortunate enough to be able to use Wolstenholme Creative Space (formerly Projects) to record in, it’s an incredible building and has been a part of everything we’ve ever done, so it felt right to set up in there, bring in some mics, and play the songs. Once again Steve was incredible to work with and helped us out a lot, THANK YOU! The tracks are being released by Clockwork Cassettes (http://www.myspace.com/clockworkcassettes) on a split with Easy Hips, and they may be released in another format as well, if all turns out as planned. We have very little happening in June unfortunately as I’m taking some time out to finish off my exams. At the minute we’re working on getting some new t-shirts sorted before summer though, and there are one or two of the previous design still available (wecameoutliketigers.bigcartel.com) if yr interested.

In August we’re doing some shows with Maths (www.myspace.com/mathsband), they’re a band who we all genuinely find inspiring, both in their music and in how they conduct themseleves, we’re excited to get to watch them for four nights in a row! It’s getting near that time of year, I have exams looming large in front of my eyes and the promise of hours and hours spent in the Library, but at least there is an end in sight... But before that, we’ve got an incredible amount planned.

Firstly though, we were recently interviewed (they also reviewed our EP) by the awesome God is in the TV, it covers a lot of what we want to say as a band, and it was great to be featured by a website I tend to read every day. www.godisinthetvzine.co.uk/content/content_detail.php?id=4263&type=Interviews

We’re recording in little over a week with Steve from the legendary a.P.A.t.T, who was involved with the ‘There is good hope...’ EP. This time, with the Post-Music cinema no longer an option, we’re going into the stunning confines of The Wolstenholme Projects gallery to record two new tracks. One is called ‘As I stare into the cobalt blue of the sky at day’s end.’ While the other is currently untitled. I think both tracks are heavier than anything we’ve recorded so far and i’m excited to get them on record. There are plans in place to release it as a split with an incredible band we’re absolutely in love with, but I won’t say anything more than that until everything is 100% confirmed.

Our song “This is the the night, what it’s done to you,” is being released on a compilation being put out by the incredible people at Wineblood Musics (www.myspace.com/winebloodmusics), it’s a screamo compilation with an amazing line-up we’re honoured to be a part of (Crocus, Kidcrash, Aussitot Mort, Battle of Wolf 359), it’s available to pre-order now and comes with a zine in hand-screened packaging. KILLER.

With June basically a write-off for myself with regards to shows, due to my aforementioned academic adventures, we’ve booked a lot for May, and have begun planing for weekenders and tours in July, August, and September. We will definitely be playing with EASY HIPS again this summer (I cannot wait), and a few other great bands. But before that we have our first shows in Preston (with HUMANFLY!!!!) and Manchester, as well as a few Liverpool shows, here are the details...

This post was really just a quick update of everything that’s been happening, and planned to happen. It doesn’t convey how passionate the four of us are about this band and it doesn’t show what this all means to us, but I will endeavour to try and do so in future posts.

Easy, Tiger!

We played some shows with the awesome Easy Hips (www.myspace.com/easyhips), this is what happened:

Day 1: It’s early in Liverpool on Thursday morning, and with the van loaded to capacity we set off for Brighton. Thursdays show was arranged by the ace Party on the Ceiling guys, they run a weekly clubnight that we’d been added to and the weekend’s festivities were ready to begin. It was a small but appreciative crowd, and loads of fun. This was our first experience of Easy Hips live, and their incredible Sinister Ginister Minister was truly a sight to behold. It was utter chaos but incredibly intense and BR00T4L for sure, I’m glad that we’d played first. After the show it was back to the Easy Hips flat for ‘a few quiet drinks’ with a small group of close friends...

Day 2: Friday morning brought hazy memories of beer bongs amid a sea of bodies (all of WCOLT plus two of Easy Hips plus others) in the one room, as well as some less than healthy looking expressions, and some hardy souls still up from the previous evening. Myself and Simon (having crashed out earliest) set off in search of breakfast. Brighton is beautiful; the seafront was great at that time and cured us, ready to load the van before our trek to the capital. None of us have really spent much time in London before so we were understandably petrified about the idea of driving around it, without any real idea of where we were going. As it happened, Suzie Satnav guided us straight there with only minor bouts of impending doom. We got some dinner and then, with the arrival of the Hips, soundchecked in record time just in time for doors. The show was good, it was awesome to see some old friends there, and hopefully we’ll be back in London again soon. It was great to get to play at $oldout, they put on so many of our favourite bands. Easy Hips once again destroyed, getting random audience participation from some slightly older gentlemen, before attempting to convince a giant bouncer to buy one of their shirts, fun times. We left for James Hips’ flat and by this stage the weary Tigers were ready to sleep, and his flatmates obliged, the much stronger Hips however partied through our lull...

Day 3: Saturday morning in London, and although tired, I definitely felt better than I had on waking in Brighton. We headed off for some breakfast while Oli sacrificed his time to go and reclaim his bass head from the central London venue by tube, rather him than me. We hatched plans to finish the set for the remaining two shows by joining easy Hips on stage for their seasonal hit ‘Hey Mister, it’s Easter’ (formerly ‘This Turkeys Bezerkey’) and I wondered if I could rival them in ‘crabbing’ abilities. Alas, it was not to be... Unfortunately, illness struck and they couldn’t make it to Nottingham, so we headed off on our own. Reaching Nottingham, it’s fair to say morale was low, and on arriving at the venue to be greeted by traffic wardens and police booking vans in the loading bays, we were feeling pretty grim about proceedings. Luckily though, Hannah from Audacious Face who was running the event had put together a great evening. We met with Galleons who were headlining the event and seen the Ex-Wizards of Arkestre open the night with a blistering set that restored our optimism. It’s fair to say that a lot of the weekends talk had centred on the mysterious DJ Paedo, who was playing in the other room, we went and saw his set, it was definitely bizarre (Easy Hips, you didn’t miss much with him...). We played probably our most intense set of the weekend and lots of people seemed to be into it (thank you to anyone who bought a CD!), then we watched Galleons play their amazing tech-grind, it left us all feeling great about things once more. So we headed back to my friend Marks flat and had some actual quiet drinks with him and his guest Dan.

Day 4: We awoke to some breakfast which helped, and with the van loaded once more, headed for home to Liverpool, with some shortish breaks at various wonderful service stations and Ikea branches along the way. We were pretty excited for the Liverpool show, Monsters of the Id and Mother Earth were both playing, and it’s fair to say they both slayed. We were once again pretty down that Easy Hips couldn’t make it, but getting to watch two of our favourite Liverpool bands helped. It was our last show of the weekend and with the audience made up pretty much entirely of our friends we wanted to ensure we gave it everything. We began the set with the 11 o’clock curfew looming large about four minutes away, but played our entire set without much pause, afraid that if we stopped they’d tell us we had to leave, it was a pretty great end to the weekend.

We had an amazing time; I don’t think this blog really conveys how much we enjoyed it. Easy Hips were incredible, thank-you so much guys!! Galleons are awesome, Mother Earth and Monsters of the ID are too. Thank-you to everyone who let us stay at their houses, we’ll see you soon. Just to finish up, we’re booking another tour with Easy Hips for the summer (August most likely) get in touch if you’re interested in putting us on.

"If winter comes, can spring be far behind?"

Our last correspondence talked of ‘Wrong Love’, and it met our expectations... We spent the night prior to the event deliberating over how to manage the sound of our instruments in such a vast bare space, had it not been for the enthusiasm of everyone involved with the evening this would have seemed an arduous task, instead it served to increase the anticipation for what was to come, and the challenging space was an opportunity to perform out of our comfort zone. With the night sold out shortly after doors had opened we got to experience some truly amazing pieces of art that definitely fit the theme of Wrong Love, as Brickface Press we offered our interpretation (via a powerpoint presentation...), that subjected the audience to short blasts of The Locust and Orchid, then wandered off to be amazed, amused, bemused, and confused by much of what was on offer. Before we played, Colin Eccleston and his ukulele performed, it was sincere and funny, he’s based in Liverpool and is well worth tracking down. As we prepared to play, the noise we were generating had assembled a fair number of spectators drawn back to the gallery’s foyer from the main exhibition space. It was supposed to be our first ever instrumental set, our new piece went really well, but with people seemingly interested to hear more we were told to play on, with Fergus on hand to quickly rig up mic’s we finished with ‘This is the Night...’, it was different to play at an event that’s primary focus was an art exhibition, but refreshing, the audience seem to watch your performance more intently, unnerving for sure but it’s something we’re keen to repeat. It was well after midnight when we finished, and so we joined the audience in the main room that had now been transformed into a warehouse rave, funtimes were had, making memories varied and hazy, but the following mornings ailments were minor given how much we enjoyed ourselves. A huge thank-you to Travis and everyone at Land (www.comeintoland.com), all the A Foundation people, and everyone who stayed late to party, it was rad! There is some video footage that I’ll upload soon.

When I heard Japandroids were coming to town it’s fair to say I got excited, Post-Nothing is an album I adore, when I heard we’d been asked to support things got better, and when I heard Liverpool’s Cold Ones were also playing I was sure it was going to be pretty crazy, it was. Apple Canon opened and tore through some ROCK MUSIC, it got the party started, and when Cold Ones took to the stage it got crazy. They’re one of the most active bands I’ve seen, it’s straight up hardcore and left us the intimidating task of following them. With things sounding perfectly for us on and off stage we had no excuses, it was the most energy we’ve ever put into any set and people seemed to be into it, thank you so much to the people who watched and came and said hi afterwards and bought CD’s, we really appreciate it! Japandroids got over some technical difficulties to finish the evening in glorious style, they even played Mclusky’s ‘To Hell With Good Intentions’, it was seriously great.

So next week we’re off with Brighton’s spazzy-hardcore gents Easy Hips for four shows, we start in Brighton on Thursday the 11th, then play Soho, London on the 12th, Nottingham on the 13th, and finish up back home in Liverpool on the 14th for the launch of Brickface Press issue #5 at the Caledonia, it’s also going to be the launch of our EP ‘there is good hope thou will seest thy friends’, GOOD TIMES! Easy Hips are an incredible band; we’ll be honoured to join them for the long weekend, go and have a listen at www.myspace.com/easyhips. We’ve got some t-shirts printed up by the lovely Mikee and Em at Vino Sangre (www.myspace.com/vinosangre) which we’ll have with us, as well as our new EP. Who let the Tigers out to kill all the (Wrong) Lovers?

It's been a while, we've seen Christmas and New Year since our last update, we all had fun but are restless to get back playing again. We've got lots of news that justifies the amount of time we've been spending at the practice room, my favourite place to be at the moment (beats the library...), so here goes -

WRONG LOVE
We're playing a very special, very different, and for the moment, very one-off, instrumental piece of music for the Wrong Love event. It's an entirely new piece we've been working seriously hard at and are itching to get playing in front of people. We are MEGA-EXCITED to be a part of this, it's on 13th Feb in A Foundation gallery, Liverpool, and there's loads of amazing art-installations (Unit 4's going to be ace i'm told) and live-art performances 'til at least 3am, if yr in Liverpool that weekend make sure you get a ticket, it's going to be an incredible event, some of what's going on is so weird in the best possible way, KILLLLLLEEEEERRRRR. Liverpool FREE SHOW

We're playing on Monday 8th Feb in Mojo with Is Tropical, it's our first show this year and we have NEW SONGS to play for the very first time. It's free and it's also my birthday the very next day, come and hang out and say happy birthday and make Monday a good day that week, should be funtimez. We'll also have lots of stuff to sell hopefully (new brickface stuff and physical CD copies of our new EP, finally!!)

There is Good Hope Thou Will Seest Thy Friends

That is the EP title, it's four-tracks and on CD, limited to 100. The packaging has taken much longer than any of us dreamed to sort out, but it's worth it we reckon - i'll post pictures and order details asap, but it's obviously going to be available at all our shows from now on.

TOUR with EASY HIPS

Yes, we're going on a little tour with Brighton's Easy Hips (www.myspace.com/easyhips - brutally spazzy and brilliant) in March, full details soon, but we'll be venturing as far as Brighton, with shows in Manchester and Norwich, and definitely a Liverpool show with some of our favourite bands (Mother Earth, Nowhere fast). The ends of ends of Autumn

Hey dear readers how are you all today, very good/good/bad/very bad? Either way glad you’re reading. This next update features the late Autumn 09 diary of We Came Out Like Tigers. We played a lot of shows, recorded our latest e.p. and met some really AWESOME people. Also great news on a mini tour with MATHS! Hmm so where to start.....

Liverpool Music Week.

Liverpool Music has come a long way since it first started. This year’s nightime street festival spanned over 20 days with god knows how many artists performing. Personal highlights for the band were Daniel Johnston, Thank you, Bagheera, Dog Show, Danananaanakyrod, Capac, Indica Ritual and many others I can’t remember right now (I have a job and therefore a curfew!!). The first show we played was at the new Korova with Liverpool based Spitting Cobras and Baltimore based Thank You. This was a free show but we ended up having to put a lot of work into it too!

Our friend Jon Davies (la racille) planed the night only for Liverpool music week to take the helm to try and lessen the cost and take some stress away from teh promotion. However wiv the venues promoters being away in Dubai (wtf! seriously!!) the night fell into chaos. No sound man, no posters, no organisation!! The brickface crew (namely us w Fergus and Priya) stepped in and, with Jon, made the gig possible. A DIY poster was made a sound man shackled and a rock show rocked! Pictures below.

Spitting cobras really left a mark on us at this show, they are the nicest guys and there music was played with a passion that cannot be ignored if you’re spectating. And Thank You blew us away. There steady and rhythmic noise-rock style offers pure musical genius and is defiantly worth a

The next show we played was in the newly named Masque (formerly barfly) with their freshly installed BEAST of a sound system. We once again opened the night kicking off at 8pm or something stupid like that. We usually embrace these opportunities with both hands and proceeded to give it 110%. We all thoroughly enjoyed performing on this night, and I think it all went down well.

A few bands not really worth a mention played after us and Dananananakyrod slayed as headliners. These guys are so much fun live. So full of energy, and some quality little guitar hooks.

The New e.p.

This leaves us with the recording of our new ep.

We've been talking about recording for a while now so we were all really relieved when we finally got dates pencilled in.

We recorded in teh abandoned cinema in Dingle, where already in a short space of time many of Liverpool’s finest bands have recorded ( Indica Ritual, A.p.a.T.t, Barberos and many others). Recording us was Jake (Stignoise, Action Beat etc etc) who is one of the soundest coolest people we have met, and Steve from A.p.a.T.t came in to help on the second day. These guys seriously know their stuff about recording and we are grateful for the help and expertise they have put into this record. Hard to talk anymore about this other than to say it was an amazing experience and we are really pleased with the results thus far.

Still waiting for the e.p. to be fully mastered but its taking shape.

We also found out when we left there is limited time before this great adopted derelict building/recording studio was due to change hands a week after and therefore cease all future plans of recordings.

So we are very pleased we got in there when we did.

Getting back to the future.

So this now leaves us with what we have plans for in the future. We are all stoked about the next Launch of Brickface Press (issue 5 now!) and as usual for any new release we have a launch night. This line up includes holy roars MATHS, us, the triumphant return of Liverpool post mathers eastfife, and Manchester Doomstars Polka Tulk. This is all going down in the Wolstenholme gallery in Wolstenholme square, Liverpool on the 5th December 09.

This will hopefully be the first chance that the public can get a hold of our new self released, handmade packaged e.p. got some nice plans for the packaging and hopefully it'll make some people happy.

We then set sail to accompany MATHS on a mini tour of the North of Britain. SWEET!!

Pheeeeew!! That was a long one. On my last day of full time employment so I’m sure my boss won't have minded me taking out some time to talk tiger with ya'll. If he does fuck it, I’m leaving! lol

Winter is fast approaching...

Things have been busy off late, and the next two weeks sees them get even busier for ourseleves, probably are busiest yet as a band, which surely can only be a good thing.

Last weekend Crocus came back up to Liverpool, we were mega-excited about seeing them again, and they didn't dissappoint, THEY SLAY LIVE. It was part of a weekend of shows they were doing with AndTheyWillRiot! that we unfortunately only managed to play one show off, so we made the most of it. It was a Brickface/La Racaille event, which means DIY art galleries rather than pubs, in the stunning Wolstenholme Projects again. It was cool to see so many people turn out, thanks if you made it down. Pariah Qarey opened the evening, it was glitchy and set the tone perfectly, we played and then ATWR! left me speechless with their mathy screamo, I cannot wait to see that band again. Crocus destroyed that night and made it a pretty perfect evening... Getting to play with yr favourite band is what it's all about!

Next week is Liverpool Music Week, theres loads of amazing stuff happening that's worth getting excited for, we're playing two free shows as part of it. On Wednesday (4th Nov) we're in Korova opening for Baltimore's Thank You, they play arty-noise type stuff, should a good one. Then, the following week (Wednesday 11th Nov) we're in The Masque opening for Dananananaykroyd, I've loved that band for a very long time, come down early and see us then hang out and watch Dananananakroyd create chaos, FUNTIMEZ GUARANTEED!

WE'RE RECORDING A NEW E.P.!

Yeah, we're finally getting into a studio to record some new songs for a new E.P., it's looking likely to be around five tracks long and it should be available really soon. We're recording it in an abandoned cinema in Liverpool, which should suit the feel of the songs we've been working on. That's happening all next weekend, i'll update with photos (and no doubt tales of the various ghosts that must inhabit the place) each day when we get done. Details on the packaging will be up soon as well...

Some words from some weeks back...

More updates this week but until then // This was a blog from the delectable Marc from a couple of weeks back that never got posted, so better late than never, here it is...

…So, yet again it has been a fair while since we graced this blog with news from WCOLT, and once more recent times have been eventful!

After BrickFace launch night #4 (details of which can be found in the previous blog) there was a little downtime as Fabian had a few exams to take care of, and the rest of us (well, maybe minus Ollie who has been working like a MACHINE of late) took time out to enjoy a break and what few days of sunshine offered as 2009s summer.

The next show that we played was a rather impromptu basement (yes, that’s basement!) show with holy roars ‘Throats’!! This all came about as a consequence of Throats needing somewhere to stay after their Stoke and Liverpool dates as part of a tour. Luckily for throats (and indeed us!) BrickFaces Fergus came to their rescue, offering them the chance to stay at BrickFace HQ. Naturally with this offer of accommodation also came the offer of a house show…and so it was, Throats were to play and who better to play before them than us!!

So it was that after playing to a sparse, soulless room in the drab O2 academy they headed back to BrickFace house. We played an intense, no, very intense 5 song set to a packed out basement, kicking it off at roughly 2am!! Throats then hit the stage playing an equally intense and very sweaty show that included more than a few doom claws and significant crowd-surfing antics, it was awesome, after which we all partied LATE into the night.

Next on the agenda was the Wolstenholme Projects gallery exhibition opening night co-hosted by BrickFace as part of the AND festival. Chrik kicked the night off with their brand of quirky math rock (these guys seriously rule!), shortly followed by the equally awesome indie-folk of Bagheera. It was then left for us to close the night with a short but sweet set that went down a storm, there were a few minor mistakes but overall this was definitely one of my favourite gigs that we’ve done thus far, reinforced by the enthusiastic crowd reaction.

The most recent gig we have played was at the renamed and renovated ‘Masque’ theatre with ‘and so I watch you from afar’. We were the first band on and consequently the crowd was fairly modest for the beginning of the set. We didn’t start particularly well yet finished strongly to a fairly healthy sized crowd that had gathered. MinionTV were also playing, was awesome to see those guys again, it was typically flawless from them.
The ever jaw-dropping ASIWYFA closed proceedings; these guys know how to play live and were on top form yet again.

Other than these live shows we were also included in BBC Liverpool’s ‘ones to watch’ feature on their website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/liverpool/hi/people_and_places/music/newsid_8249000/8249160.stm which was rather flattering. It was also nice to see the healthy array of talent that are our peers on the said website, showing that Liverpool’s music scene is alive and kicking, and if you scratch beneath the layer of dirge that is current popular music there are some true gems to be found.

So that concludes our recent history since the last blog, posing the question of what is on the horizon for WCOLT, well: lots indeed!
Another show with Crocus and their tour-mates ‘and they will riot!’ (24/10/09) A long but positively awesome 6-hour road-trip to Southampton follows the next day (25/10/09) to play King Alfreds: once again with the mighty Crocus. Then on the 4th November we will be playing with Baltimore’s finest ‘Thank you’ at the wonderful mello mello, it’s a music week FREE SHOW, which promises to be major fun times!

The long promised recording of our most recent (and frankly far superior) songs, with the inclusion of a slightly older one should finally be committed to disk, and then (fingers crossed!) another show at Liverpool Music Week! (it’s with a band we’ve loved for quite a while, we cannot wait)

We BLOG Like Tigers // Again, finally...

It's been a long time, and promises to keep this updated were, unfortunatley, broken. For this you have my apologies! BUT hopfully this will shed light on happenings since our last post, all those months ago...

SHOWS!

We've been fortunate enough to play the most amazing shows recently, firstly we headed off to the lakes for a show in Kendal with The FF'ers and Picasshole. It was a strange one, and we played some new songs for the first time (more on that later), but it was ace. Kendal is stunning and Will (from the awesome Asleep Beneath Volcanoes and Picasshole) let us stay at his, where he produced home brewed ale for us and we listened to Mi Ami all night, good timez as they say.

Brickfacer's Fergus (who is also our organiser/carrier/midset lifesaver) and Priya came along, that's them above, we spent the next day in the countryside and looked for stray animals to play with, amazing scenes.

Us in Kendal, EVERYTHING was made of stone and looked cool.

Two weeks back (feels more like two days, the intervening time was spent pretty much in the library, band+uni work = revision nightmare) was the launch night for Brickface Press Issue IV, after hectic line-up changes, Crocus were confirmed as headliners. It was in Arena House in Liverpool, an awesome independent gallery, and loads of people came down for it, thanks so much if you were there! Picasshole opened the night and left everyone stunned, that is one talented man (check out his band www.myspace.com/asleepbeneathvolcanoes), and Fine Modern Gentlemen were fine, modern and ace! Crocus totally ruled that night, they are unbelievable live, all being well we'll have a show with them in October again, I cannot wait. Go and listen to them, www.myspace.com/crocusband. During the set, we were asked to play another show that Sunday, as the openers for Chrik's gig at The Caledonia had pulled out. THIS IS THE BEST WAY EVER TO BOOK BANDS!!! We turned up, plugged in, played a few seconds, EVRYTHING BROKE! Well maybe not everything, but yeah most things. Fergus earned his keep that night alright (THANK-YOU!), rescuing drums and mic stands at an olympic pace. We felt we'd played better, but got some really nice messages on myspace from some really nice people who said they were into it, this meant a lot! Monsters Build Mean Robots played and slayed and then Chrik astounded everyone, that Chris is one sick guitarist, check them out as well www.myspace.com/chrikmusic.

The best thing about these shows was definitely meeting amazing new people (all the Crocus guys, Chrik, MBMR and their 'touring crew' of people from other great bands, FF'ers, and loads more), and hanging out with people we hadn't seen in ages (Will, Pete, and again loads more). IT WAS FUN GUYS!

RECORDING NEW SONGS!

Yes, we're recording new songs at the end of this month, planning once more on another limited self-release (there may be cassettes as well, I hope... cassettes are awesome) with some cool packaging (more details on this when it's finalised, but photographs and wax seals anyone?). Two of the songs we're recording are 'Iron Sorrows' and 'The Ends of Ends of Eras' we've played them at our last few shows so you may have heard them, we'll be doing a few more as well, tracklist in the future...

Yeah, we've got some shows booked, and yes we're excited to be playing with ASIWYFA again (remember last time??!), they kill it live, it's September 25th in The Masque (used to be Barfly) in Liverpool, get in touch if you'd like a ticket (or 30, that'd be really convenient... i'm kidding!). Plans are in place to play with CROCUS again in Liverpool in October, IT IS GOING TO BE KILLER!

A Foundation Friday 29th May

Just a really quick update about the show we are playing in the A Foundation on Friday the 29th May. This one came as quite a surprise to us guys (only had a week and a halfs notice!) but this oppertunity for us is a bit to good to miss. It's May time // We Stress Like Tigers

It's been a little while, so some more stuff to read for those of you who'd like to. As Oli has said below, playing with ASIWYFA was amazing, we had such a good time at that show, they're an awesome band, can't wait to see them again. A little while back we played a living-room show, IT WAS LOUD and it was fun. It was with the awesome POLKA TULKK, check them out at www.myspace.com/polkatulkk for some doom aceness. We met some lovely people and they took some nice pictures which you can see below...

After that and the now almost-mythical-in-our-own-heads ASIWYFA show, we played at the launch for issue 3 of Brickface Press (that's the zine we run with some other brave people - go to www.myspace.com/brickfacepress for more on that, we interviewed Ian MacKaye and Adam Gnade wrote a short story for us!!).

This one was with Brontide who along with being the nicest guys ever, absolutely slayed live, if you made it to that one thanks, and I'm sure you agree about Brontide! Some pics from that one for yr viewing then would be appropriate -

It really is a nice venue... (Nice one Leaf Tea Shop and Bar, and cheers for the juice!)

One last thing before we talk about the future, our show in Kendal scheduled for yesterday (the 8th May) had to be cancelled due to a problem with the venue, we were gutted about that one as we were all really looking forward to it, but it WILL be booked again for summer time, I'm looking forward to it!

It is May time and for anyone still in education that means exams, myself and Marc are currently dealing with that particular tribulation, while the other two are living it up as graduates. This means that for a couple of weeks its hard to get time to be as active as we'd like with the band, nevertheless we have a couple of awesome shows lined up in the next few weeks (revision? stress? na, not for me, I've got a show to play tonight, I'll get caught up tomorrow, promise!) - Our good friends from Brew Records Castrovalva are coming to play in Liverpool as part of their UK tour with Mt. and we're opening for them - it's at the Caledonia on the 17th May, check out the flyer below...

After that Liverpool goes a bit strange for a few days as every band in the land descends for Sound City, we're playing a show for that with Spokes from Manchester (yes, I'm excited, I love that band) and a few others, and best of all it's at Mello Mello - remember last time we were all there for Brickface II??! Funtimes indeed!

Hopefully that's been an exhilarating read, if not may I suggest the current issue of Brickface Press, Adam Gnades story really is worth a look. Time to be getting back to the text books then. FD x

the 11th of April

as i sit here at 6.00am on sunday the 12th of april, i come to realise that i am in someway fulfillig a boyhood dream that i have always wanted, but whist not ever writing it off, never contemplated experiencing. it started off after a hazy long night serving victorian clad consumers at the kazimier (liverpool homegrown entertainment disco, stageshow, rave, shall we say?) cycling home at 7am in the mourning, waking up many hours later to eat and prepare for our first gig in the barfly, supporting none other then the almighty and so i watch you from afar (ASIWYFA for future refernece ;-). we played well, our ep sold well, and brickface and we came out like tigers future prospects are looking rosey :-). we witnessed one of the best live performances of our young lives, no joke, from ASIWYFA and split paths with simon barr fiddleeeer and priya sharmsses. the remaining wcolt members decided it was apt time to celebrate and headed for a night out. upon our journey we noticed a few of the ASIWYFA guys hanging out in there tour van. after a short wave and beckoning we made, we soon found ourselves in there tour van drinking beer and talking about things i cant remember....... im tired give me a break its fricking 10 past six! we proceed to drink plenty and talkin double that number. memories where made for me and thats the most valuable thing to a man. they are a fantastic bunch of lads and we wish them all the best. *YAWN* and on that most profound and truly spoken of blogs, i bid you farewell dear reader. more to come soon. oli x

Firstly SHOWS:

We're playing a house show with the awesome Polka Tulkk on Wednesday 8th April, it's at their house, if you'd like to come then please message us and we'll send you the address - Lingus Fest 09 - funtimes await!

ASIWYFA at the Barfly - We have some guest list spots for this that will grant admission for a little less than advertised, probably helpfull giving the economic collapse and all, again for this one just send us a message or email and we'll get it sorted for you. Apologies for the ghetto looking poster...

We've also got Brickface III with Brontide on april 17th, a show in Kendal on May 9th, and an ace gig on May 17th with Castrovalva and Mt., busy indeed.

A mega limited release is in the process of being prepared, the artwork and packaging is going to be ACES!

So, we decided to set up a blog, it's easier than updating myspace and allows us to do more stuff with it, to make it more interesting for you, interweb users, to read. Expect sporadic, irregular and questionably relevant updates to comprise the majority of the output here, but rest assured all the important information will be embedded deep beneath all that somewhere, very deep beneath all that somewhere...

Exciting times for WCOLT at the minute, loads of cool shows coming up, updates very soon, as well as information on an extremely limited release!
